Types of hernia repair surgeries: Advanced Surgical Technology

We perform several types of surgical hernia repair treatments. These include:

Robotic surgery for hernia repair

The use of robotics has significantly advanced the practice of hernia repair. In this approach, our surgeon sits at a specialized console, from which the surgical instruments are directed. The inner structure of the body is revealed on a video monitor, allowing for extreme precision. This approach requires smaller incisions, as the surgical tools operated from the console are much smaller than standard surgical instruments.

Laparoscopic surgery for hernia repair

Laparoscopic surgery involves using very small surgical tools, with the inner structure of the body revealed by a tiny camera, on the end of a very small tube (catheter) inserted into the body. The aperture through which the tissues are emerging is repaired with specialized surgical tools, requiring a far smaller incision than is needed to perform open surgery.

Open surgery for hernia repair

Some types of hernias require open surgery for a successful resolution. Primary inguinal hernias (in which a section of the intestine is protruding through the abdominal tissues, creating a bulge) may require placing surgical mesh for tissue stability. Open surgery may be necessary for this procedure.

Umbillical Hernia Surgery for hernia repair

Umbilical hernia repair is a surgical procedure that addresses the protrusion of abdominal tissue near the navel. Through careful reinforcement of the weakened abdominal wall using sutures or mesh implants, the surgery eliminates the visible bulge and prevents potential complications such as pain and strangulation. Advances in surgical techniques make umbilical hernia repair a safe and effective solution, providing patients with renewed confidence and comfort.

What causes a hernia?

A hernia can develop for several reasons, but certain factors can cause the condition to occur:

  • Pressure and weakness in the fascia, the tissue surrounding the body tissues, allowing an organ or other tissue to protrude through the weak area.
  • A condition related to weakened muscles due to aging or lack of exercise.
  • Physical exertion putting an extreme level of strain on the abdomen or groin.
  • Obesity.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Constant coughing.
  • Constipation and accompanying straining.
  • A weakness in tissues present since birth, such as an umbilical hernia.

Types of hernias

Various types of hernias can develop. Each requires a customized surgery to repair, which should occur as rapidly as possible to avoid complications.

Inguinal hernia

An “inguinal hernia” occurs when a weakness in the abdomen allows tissues to protrude, creating a bulge. Whether intestine or other tissue, the bulging tissue is typically painful when lifting, coughing, or bending your body. An inguinal hernia may not be a serious physical issue but can lead to complications that can endanger your health if left untreated.

Incisional hernia

This type of hernia is called “incisional” as it develops at a surgical incision site. These hernias can occur after undergoing an abdominal surgical procedure. The hernia often develops between three to six months after abdominal surgery but could develop earlier or later.

Hiatal hernia

A hiatal hernia is a condition in which a section of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm, a muscle structure that separates the chest and abdomen. The condition can be the underlying cause of a range of uncomfortable symptoms, including heartburn, bloating, chest pain, swallowing difficulties, vomiting, shortness of breath, and others. The word “hiatus” refers to the opening in the tissues, hence the name.
