Managing Breast Pain
Breast pain is not uncommon and often involves only one breast. It is often associated with fibrocystic breasts. Managing patients with breast pain include collecting a complete patient history, performing a clinical breast exam, and ordering appropriate imaging such as mammograms and ultrasounds. Breast pain rarely indicates breast cancer but can disrupt a patient’s daily life. A breast care specialist is trained to identify this condition's appropriate assessment and treatment.
Men can also experience breast pain due to gynecomastia, a condition in which normal male breast tissue is enlarged - this is often hormone, medication, or age-related.
