The appendix is a small organ located at the top of the large intestine. Oddly, the function of this small organ is not clear, but it is theorized that it stores “good bacteria” to release when the digestive system is under stress. It is also the organ that most commonly requires surgical removal, as it is particularly prone to inflammation and infection.
Symptoms of appendicitis
Appendicitis can be difficult to diagnose, as it presents symptoms like several other physical conditions and illnesses. The symptoms of appendicitis can include:
- Pain located around the belly button, first mild, and worsening to a sharp unbearable sensation.
- The pain is then experienced in the lower right area of your abdomen.
- You may suffer diarrhea or constipation.
- You may have a fever.
- You may feel nauseous or vomit.
- Lack of appetite.
A person who experiences these symptoms should undergo a medical evaluation at once. If appendicitis is diagnosed through a set of tests, the appendix must be surgically removed. At Advanced Surgical Technology, we employ advanced laparoscopic surgery and employ a groundbreaking robotic surgery system for this procedure, rather than open surgery. Our board-certified surgeon, Dr. Liyanage, uses the world’s most advanced robotic surgery system to perform this critical surgery – for the benefit of his patients. Removing the appendix with these modern techniques produces a shorter incision, less risk to the patient, and a faster recovery.
What to expect in laparoscopic appendix removal surgery?
The removal of the appendix, when performed laparoscopically, produces less physical trauma, risk, and the recovery is swift. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and you will not experience any discomfort. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, a tiny incision is placed in your abdomen, through which a tube (the laparoscope) is inserted.
The tiny camera on the end of the tube reveals the inner structure of your abdomen, so that the surgery can be performed with precision. The appendix is then removed through an incision, and the laparoscope and surgical tools removed. The incisions are then closed, and the surgery is complete.
This is usually an outpatient procedure, and you are free to return home to rest and recover and will have full aftercare instructions. Every case is unique, and should it become evident that the appendix is burst, your treatment plan may change, and open surgery may be required.

Your recovery
In most cases, a laparoscopic or robotic surgical removal of the appendix is an out-patient procedure. Once the surgery is complete, you can return home, under the care of another adult, to rest. You will have pain medication to keep you comfortable in the early phase of healing.
The day following your surgery, begin taking gentle walks to stimulate healthy circulation and ward off the development of blood clots. We will be closely monitoring your recovery, and are always available to answer your questions or concerns.
