In-Office Wound Treatment

In-office wound treatment includes a range of procedures and other treatments for wounds performed in our office. It may consist of cleansing, irrigation, and debridement (removing dead or diseased tissue from the wound).

Wound treatment may also involve topical treatments, oral medications, or advanced wound care therapies, such as growth factor therapy and tissue therapy.

Who is a candidate for this treatment?

If you have a wound that is not healing properly, you may be a candidate for in-office wound treatment. Wounds that do not heal properly are known as chronic wounds. At Advanced Surgical Technology, a customized treatment plan can be developed to treat:

A surgical wound that has reopened
Pressure ulcer (skin that breaks down with too much pressure over a bony area)

Evaluation of blood supply

An initial circulatory evaluation can help determine whether you need vascular surgery to restore blood flow and oxygen to the area. Wounds cannot heal without an adequate supply of oxygen.

Debridement

If your wound requires debridement, it may be performed in the office. The doctor will use sterile instruments to remove dead or diseased tissue from the area. Other possible treatment options include:

Irrigation spray to remove unhealthy tissue
Creams or enzymes to digest diseased tissue painlessly
Specialized topical agents to help with painless debridement

Is there any recovery time after in-office wound treatment?

Repeat treatments may be needed in comprehensive in-office wound care. After the wound is cleaned, a dressing will be applied to help prevent infection and keep the area moist. Different types of dressings may be used as the wound heals. Complete recovery after wound care can take weeks or months.

Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before and after you touch your wound. Keep a clean dressing on the wound. We will instruct you on how to clean the wound and change the dressing. Protect the area from bumps or physical injury. Be sure your diet is healthy, so your body has the nutrients it needs to heal.
