Peripheral vascular disease may be caused by a narrowing of blood vessels, a blood vessel blockage, or blood vessel spasms. The condition can impact various circulatory system areas, including the arteries, veins, or the lymphatic system. The disease usually presents symptoms on the legs and feet.

Symptoms of peripheral vascular disease

  • Pain or swelling in arms or legs
  • Numbness or weakness in arms or legs
  • Coldness or discoloration in legs or feet
  • Ulcers on legs or feet
  • Red skin or a burning sensation experienced in the legs or feet
  • Hair loss appearing on the legs or feet
  • Pain (burning or aching) when at rest

What causes peripheral vascular disease?

PVD can develop due to a range of physical conditions but is most often the result of a buildup of plaque within the blood vessels, which limits the flow of blood to the feet and legs. The buildup of plaque also leads to the blood vessel becoming unable to deliver oxygen and healthful nutrients to the muscles, skin, and other tissues. In some cases, blood clots develop in the arterial walls, further limiting blood flow or even blocking the blood flow to the body’s major arteries.  PVD can also result from an injury, irregular muscle structure or ligaments, or an infection in the area.

Angioplasty surgery for peripheral vascular disease

An angioplasty may be the treatment option for your condition. In this advanced procedure, a narrowed artery is widened by the insertion of a thin tube, called a catheter, into the vessel. The device is then slowly advanced to the narrowed area of the artery. A specialized balloon on the end of the catheter is then inflated, working to enlarge the restricted area of the artery.
